Become a Referee

general information

The NCVA is an organization that provides volleyball officials in Northern California  & Northern Nevada to all levels of the sport from Middle School to College. If you are interested in becoming an Official (Referee) or are a Club Directors/Coach interested in attending the NCVA Symposium, the NCVA offers an Officials Training Symposium each season in January.

The Symposium is a three day event designed to give the official actual court/game experience while being mentored by our veteran officials prior to sending them to their first matches. We feel that although rules clinics are valuable tools, the on court game type setting is a good way to give newer officials the game experience they need prior to the start of the season.

The first day of the Symposium is divided into two parts, AM & PM:

The AM portion will be in a classroom setting and will introduce the officials to the basics of the game of volleyball. The attendees will be divided into smaller groups to attend classes on subject such as Court and Equipment Match Protocol (when to arrive, conducting warm-ups etc.) and Officiating Mechanics (signal sequences, time out and substitution procedures etc.) They will also attend classes on Ball Handing (setting and other contract violations) and Score Keeping.

In the PM, you will experience the actual atmosphere of a real tournament. You will participate in watching a match and, while watching the game, a veteran official will answer your questions. This demonstration will help you see, in action, what you just learned in class. Then, you will be asked to come back the second and third days of the Symposium weekend to work on the court as an actual official. You will work with a veteran official and be debriefed after the match to help you improve before we send you out on your own.

If you are interested in becoming an official, please sign up for one of the Symposiums offered in the area. All Symposium information can be found below under Symposium Dates and Information.
