The Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) invites qualified individuals from across the region to apply for upcoming Board of Directors positions. The Board provides strategic oversight, supports athlete safety and development, and ensures responsible governance in service of the Northern California volleyball community.
Qualifications and Attributes
NCVA welcomes applicants from a wide range of professional and volleyball backgrounds. Ideal candidates demonstrate:

Consistent with its governance philosophy, NCVA seeks balanced geographic representation and a range of skills to support effective Board decision-making.
Term Lengths and Expectations of Service
NCVA Directors serve defined, staggered terms designed to promote leadership continuity, institutional knowledge, and balanced governance. Term structures are established in accordance with NCVA bylaws and governance expectations.
- Directors appointed or elected during the current governance transition will serve terms structured to support an orderly rotation of leadership responsibilities.
- Staggered terms help ensure that Board experience is retained while providing regular opportunities for new voices and perspectives.
- Directors may be eligible for additional terms, subject to NCVA bylaws and Board governance policies.
Board service reflects a commitment to collaborative leadership and fiduciary responsibility. Directors are expected to engage respectfully in deliberations, exercise independent judgment, and support the collective decisions of the Board once actions are approved.
Through this structure, NCVA seeks to maintain a Board that reflects strong governance practices, broad regional representation, and the evolving needs of the Northern California volleyball community.
Independence & Conflict Limitations
To maintain compliance with nonprofit law and NCVA Bylaws:
- No more than 49% of Directors may be “interested persons,” meaning individuals compensated by NCVA or closely related to someone compensated by NCVA within the prior 12 months.
- Directors must disclose any actual or potential conflicts and recuse themselves when required.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Support NCVA’s and USA Volleyball’s mission and values
- Complete conflict-of-interest disclosure and SafeSport compliance requirements
- Understand that service on the Board of Directors is a voluntary, unpaid position
- Participate in regular Board meetings and committee activities
Time Commitment and Meeting Expectations
Serving on the NCVA Board of Directors requires a meaningful commitment of time, preparation, and engagement. Directors are expected to participate actively in Board discussions and contribute to the organization’s long-term success.
Typical expectations include:
- Attendance at regular and special Board meetings. Board meetings, which are generally held 4 times per year with special Meetings held as needed. All NCVA Board meetings are held virtually.
- Preparation in advance of meetings by reviewing materials and participating in informed discussions
- Participation on at least one Board committee or special project as needed
- Occasional attendance at key NCVA events or community activities when possible
Role of the Board of Directors
The NCVA Board of Directors provides strategic leadership, oversight, and governance for the organization. Directors focus on long-term vision, policy, and accountability while supporting a strong and sustainable volleyball community.
Directors are responsible for:
- Providing strategic oversight and long-term vision
- Supporting SafeSport and athlete safety initiatives
- Reviewing and approving budgets, policies, and major organizational initiatives
- Monitoring organizational performance and financial oversight
- Upholding transparency, accountability, and ethical governance
- Serving as ambassadors for the Northern California volleyball community and USA Volleyball
Board members do not oversee operational decisions such as tournament seeding, formatting, scheduling, or administrative processes. These responsibilities belong to NCVA staff and leadership. While Board members provide strategic oversight, the role is governance-focused rather than operational.
The Board works in partnership with the Executive Director and staff, who are responsible for daily operations, program implementation, staffing, and event management. This clear division of roles supports effective governance and organizational success.
Board Member Selection Process
NCVA is committed to an open, transparent, and thoughtful approach to Board member selection. The process is designed to encourage broad participation while ensuring that Directors bring the experience, perspective, and leadership needed to support the organization’s mission.
Application
Interested individuals submit an online application outlining their background, experience, and interest in serving on the NCVA Board of Directors. Applications close on March 20, 2026.
Review and Evaluation
Applications are reviewed to confirm eligibility, qualifications, and alignment with NCVA’s governance needs. Candidates may be contacted for additional information or invited to participate in interviews or further discussion.
Selection Methods
NCVA is currently refining its long-term election procedures as part of an ongoing governance transition aligned with evolving USA Volleyball expectations. During this transition period, the organization will utilize a phased approach to Board member selection.
Current Selection Approach
NCVA is accepting open online applications from interested and qualified individuals until March 20,2026. Three (3) Directors will be selected by the Board of Directors from the pool of applicants to support leadership continuity and organizational stability. NCVA maintains an open application process designed to encourage broad participation. Qualified candidates may be invited to participate in interviews or further discussion by the Board nominating committee.
Future Election Process
NCVA intends to introduce a member-based election process for Four (4) additional Directors. NCVA club representatives will elect the Board members by geographical location. The structure, timing, and procedures for these elections are currently under development to ensure clarity, fairness, geographical representation, and strong governance practices.
