2027 NCVA POWER LEAGUE UPDATES

The NCVA is excited to announce the 2027 Power League schedule along with several exciting updates designed to enhance the competitive experience for our clubs, athletes, and families.

As we continue to evaluate the needs of our membership and the ever-changing national volleyball landscape, we’ve made several adjustments to this year’s Power League structure and championship format. These updates are intended to provide greater scheduling flexibility, create additional opportunities for teams to earn bids to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship, and better align our season with National Qualifiers and other major events.

The information below outlines the 2027 Power League schedule, championship formats, bid opportunities, and other important changes for the upcoming season.

Power League registration is scheduled to open during the week of July 13. An exact registration date and opening time will be announced in the near future, giving clubs ample opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season.

We look forward to another exciting year of competition and appreciate the continued support and feedback from our member clubs as we work to provide the best possible Power League experience.

Schedule Flexibility and Future Adjustments

The NCVA is committed to building a competition schedule that provides the best possible experience for our clubs, teams, athletes, and families. As we continue to evaluate the competitive landscape, flexibility remains a key priority.

Schedule Subject to Change
The published 2027 Power League schedule is subject to change and may be adjusted based on facility availability, site allocations, or the schedules of USA Volleyball National Qualifiers and other major events.

While we do not anticipate significant adjustments, the NCVA will make changes when necessary to provide the best possible experience for our members.

Our Scheduling Philosophy
When developing the Power League schedule, the NCVA strives to balance several important factors, including:
  • USA Volleyball National Qualifier schedules
  • NCVA Special Events
  • Power League competition dates
  • Facility availability
  • Opportunities for teams to pursue multiple qualification pathways
  • Travel considerations for clubs and families
Our goal is to provide clubs and teams with as much flexibility as possible to build the competition schedule that best meets their needs throughout the season.

The schedule adjustments being introduced this season are intended to better serve our membership based on current competition opportunities and scheduling considerations.

The NCVA will continue to evaluate feedback from clubs, monitor changes within the national volleyball landscape, and adjust as needed in future seasons. We remain committed to maintaining a flexible approach that evolves to meet the needs of our members while providing the best possible competitive experience.

Power League Format Update

For the upcoming season, NCVA will be implementing a new Power League championship format designed to place greater emphasis on performance at Region Championships while continuing to reward teams for their results throughout the regular season.

Previous Format
Historically, teams earned points throughout the Power League season based on their finishes at League Dates #1, #2, and #3. These points were carried into Region Championships, where teams earned additional points. The combined season total was then used to determine final overall standings and bid allocations.

New Format
Beginning this season, points earned during League Dates #1, #2, and #3 will be used exclusively to determine seeding for Region Championships.

Region Championships is now a standalone championship event where all final standings are determined. USAV National bids will be awarded based solely on each team’s finish at Region Championships, in order of placement.

What Stays the Same
  • Teams will continue to participate in the Qualifier and three League Dates.
  • League Date results will remain important and will determine Region Championship seeding.
  • Gold, Silver and Bronze Divisions (Top-36) will still play in the Championship Division.
  • Region Championships will continue to serve as the culminating event of the Power League season.
What Changes
  • Points accumulated during League Dates #1-3 will no longer carry forward into the final standings.
  • Region Championships will determine the final order of finish.
  • USAV bids will be awarded based on Region Championship results rather than cumulative season points.
Why the Change?
This format creates a true championship event where the top-36 in each division enters Region Championships with the opportunity to earn the highest possible finish based on its performance that weekend. At the same time, teams are still rewarded for strong regular-season results through improved seeding and competitive positioning entering the championship tournament.

We believe this format will increase the excitement and importance of Region Championships while maintaining the value of participation and success throughout the Power League season.

The NCVA remains committed to providing competitive opportunities and multiple pathways for teams to qualify for the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship.

Region Championships Schedule Update for 15s, 16s, and 17s Divisions

To provide teams with an earlier opportunity to qualify for the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship and improve the overall championship experience, the NCVA is adjusting the schedule for the Championship Division at Power League Region Championships.

What’s Changing?
This season, the Championship Division at Region Championships for the 15s (Top-36), 16s (Top-36), and 17s (All Teams) will be held in late March or early April, earlier than in previous years.

To better align with the national qualification calendar, the 18s (all teams) and 15s Championship Division (Top-36 only) will be scheduled together on March 20-21, while the 17s (All Teams) and 16s Championship Division (Top-36 only) will be scheduled together on April 3-4. This schedule accounts for the age group divisions at the Pacific Northwest Qualifier (PNQ), ensuring that 16s and 17s teams do not have to choose between competing at Region Championships and attending one of the premier National Qualifiers on the West Coast.

This change is designed to allow teams to compete for National Championship bids earlier in the season, giving qualified teams additional time to make travel arrangements and prepare for Nationals.

Benefits of the New Schedule
Holding the Championship Division earlier in the season provides several advantages:
  • Teams can earn National Championship bids sooner.
  • Qualified teams have additional time to secure travel, lodging, and other arrangements for Nationals.
  • Teams that do not earn bids at Region Championships will still have opportunities to participate in National Qualifiers and the NCVA Regional Bid Tournament (more information on that below) later in the season.
  • Aligning the championship schedule with the Pacific Northwest Qualifier minimizes scheduling conflicts and allows more teams to participate in both events if they choose.

15s and 16s Divisions
For the 15s and 16s age groups, the Championship Division will include the top 36 teams in each age division based on Power League standings and seeding procedures.

The 15s Championship Division will be held on March 20-21, while the 16s Championship Division will be held on April 3-4.

Teams seeded 37th and below will continue their season by competing in the Region Championships Challenger Division, which will be held in May.

This structure allows the top teams to compete for bids earlier while still providing a meaningful championship experience for all participating teams.

17s Division
For the 17s age group, all teams will compete in the Championship or Challenger Divisions on April 3-4.

Moving the entire 17s Region Championships to April 3-4 helps reduce scheduling conflicts with high school events and activities that commonly occur during the end of April and May. This adjustment is intended to provide a better competitive experience and increased participation opportunities for the 17s teams throughout the spring season.

The NCVA believes this updated championship schedule creates a more efficient pathway to bid qualification while providing teams and families with additional flexibility for travel planning and spring competition schedules. By aligning our championship calendar with major National Qualifiers, we are giving teams the greatest possible opportunity to pursue multiple paths to qualification while enhancing the overall Power League experience.

NCVA Regional Bid Tournament – NEW!

The NCVA is pleased to introduce the NCVA Regional Bid Tournament, which will provide additional opportunities for teams to earn bids to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship.

The Regional Bid Tournament will be held on May 8-9 at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento and will be open to eligible teams in the 13s through 17s age divisions.

Available Bids
The following bids will be awarded through the NCVA Regional Bid Tournament:
  • 13s: (1) American Bid
  • 14s: (1) American Bid and (1) Freedom Bid
  • 15s: (1) American Bid and (1) Freedom Bid
  • 16s: (1) American Bid and (1) Freedom Bid
  • 17s: (1) American Bid and (1) Freedom Bid
Eligibility
Participation in the Regional Bid Tournament is limited to teams that compete in NCVA Power League.

Teams that have already earned a bid in the American Division or a higher division through a National Qualifier or the NCVA region are not eligible to participate. If a team earns a Freedom bid at NCVA Region Championships, they may participate to upgrade to an American bid.

Team from Championship and Challenger divisions are eligible

Seeding
Teams will be seeded into the Regional Bid Tournament based on their final finish at Region Championships or their seeding heading into Region Championships if their division has not yet competed.

This ensures that teams are rewarded for their performance throughout the Power League season while providing a dedicated event focused on bid qualification.

Refund Policy
Teams that register for the Regional Bid Tournament and subsequently earn a bid through a National Qualifier or the NCVA Region before the event will receive a full refund of their tournament entry fee.

Why the Regional Bid Tournament?
The addition of the Regional Bid Tournament provides another pathway for teams to qualify for the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship. By creating a dedicated bid event following Region Championships, more teams will have the opportunity to compete for available bids in a highly competitive championship environment.

Important Update:

Upcoming Events have changed Venues

Hello Directors, Coaches, and Representatives;

With the ever-changing COVID restrictions in the State of California, it has been our effort to have a return-to-play health and safety plan in place while working with the different venues and counties.

As we have been working with the San Jose Convention Center and local health authorities, it is confirmed that they will be enforcing the strictest policies in the State of CA requiring everyone over the age of 12 to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination. Future NCVA events scheduled at the San Jose Convention Center will be revisited and information will be sent out when finalized.

It is our belief that this will impose an undue burden on the players, coaches, and families. The NCVA respects everyone’s choice to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or not.

In order to ensure full participation, we have been able to secure the Sacramento Convention Center in lieu of the San Jose Convention Center for the December 18th – 19th, 2021 events:

  • Boys’ Power League Region Championships
  • Girls’ 18’s and 17’s Power League Qualifier
The Sacramento County COVID-19 requirements are as follows for all attendees ages three (3) years and older:
  • Provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination
  • OR provide a negative COVID-19 test administered 72 hours or less prior to the start of the event
Please be prepared to show either of the above at the time of entry to the Sacramento Convention Center with a valid ID. We would like to thank you all for understanding this change during these COVID times while we continue to keep the athletes playing the sport they love! In regards to your hotel reservations, if applicable to your team(s), THS is working with the San Jose hotels to cancel all reservations that were booked through THS without any penalties to you. You do not need to contact THS to cancel your reservations. For teams in need of hotel accommodations in Sacramento, please be patient as THS secures the best possible rates for you and your families. Once the blocks are confirmed, an email will be sent via TM2Sign to all teams. THS will be able to transfer names from your reservations in San Jose to your new hotel booking in Sacramento if you choose to move. For additional questions about hotels, please contact THS at [email protected].

We look forward to hosting our first event in the newly remodeled Sacramento Convention Center!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email [email protected]
